Where to begin
Welcoming a baby brings new responsibilities, blessings and joy. Speak with a rabbi about the Hebrew name, ceremony and preparations for your family.
Brit milah and your baby’s care
A brit milah welcomes a Jewish boy into the covenant of Avraham and is normally held on the eighth day, when the baby is medically fit. Health can require postponement. Arrange a qualified mohel through your rabbi, discuss fitness and timing with the mohel and your baby’s clinician, and confirm follow-up care before making firm bookings. The Hebrew name is usually given at the brit.
Naming a baby girl
A girl receives her Hebrew name in connection with a Torah reading in shul. Speak with your rabbi about arranging this at the earliest possible Torah reading after her birth. Ask your rabbi to coordinate the naming and blessings; a family celebration can be arranged separately.
A nurse for the bris
If you would like a nurse to support your family around the bris, ask about their experience with brissim, current nursing registration, availability and the care they provide before and afterwards. Agree responsibilities with the mohel and your baby’s clinician. Nursing support and the mohel’s role are distinct.
Keep the celebration manageable
Choose a comfortable setting, make room for feeding and rest, and ask caterers about delivery and supervision. Agree photography and guest-sharing preferences in advance.
Jewish practice & meaning
A meaningful welcome
Choose the Hebrew name thoughtfully and discuss family naming customs with your rabbi. Ask whether any other mitzvah, such as pidyon haben for an eligible firstborn son, applies to your family; it does not apply to every firstborn.
