Where to begin
A Jewish wedding begins the building of a Jewish home. Start with a rabbi before confirming the date or venue. Discuss halachic requirements, marriage preparation and family customs, alongside the Australian legal marriage arrangements.
Start with the ceremony
Ask your rabbi about documentation, suitable witnesses, the ketubah and chuppah. Confirm who will handle the legal marriage requirements and check the officiant’s authorisation through the official Australian register. Legal registration and halachic requirements both need attention.
Prepare for married life
Arrange marriage preparation and learning about taharat hamishpachah (family purity) with qualified teachers. Ask privately about mikvah preparation and appointments. Private access details do not belong in a public directory.
Coordinate the suppliers
Agree the venue, kosher catering and kitchen arrangements together. Confirm who supplies and installs the chuppah, who checks ketubah wording, and who handles flowers, photography, music, setup and pack-down.
Put the details in writing
Confirm costs, deposits, cancellation terms, accessibility, weather alternatives and a contact person for the day.
Jewish practice & meaning
Understanding the chuppah
The chuppah is the wedding canopy. The ceremony includes the giving of the ring, the ketubah (marriage contract) and the sheva brachot (seven blessings). Your rabbi will explain the order, the witnesses and each person’s role.
Planning with Jewish practice in mind
Discuss kosher wine and catering, a suitable yichud room and separate dancing arrangements with your rabbi and suppliers. Ask which preparations and customs apply to your wedding.
