Where to begin

You do not need to organise everything at once. Contact Sydney Chevra Kadisha and a rabbi for guidance on Jewish burial and mourning. Ask someone close to you to help with practical calls while you take the next step.

First calls

Contact Sydney Chevra Kadisha through its official contact page for reporting a death and funeral guidance. If a death has just occurred, follow the instructions of the attending medical team or relevant authorities. Tell the funeral service about your family’s religious wishes.

Funeral and burial arrangements

Ask about the next steps, documentation, cemetery options, timing and costs. Confirm arrangements directly before sharing information with guests.

Shiva and immediate support

Ask your rabbi or congregation about shiva, prayer arrangements and practical help. A friend can coordinate meals and visits privately. Share home addresses and access instructions only with intended visitors.

Kaddish, minyan and ongoing care

Your congregation can explain Kaddish and help find a suitable minyan. Ask about grief support for adults and children; different family members may need different kinds of help.

Stone settings and yahrzeit

Ask the funeral service, cemetery and rabbi about matzevah or stone-setting arrangements and how to record the yahrzeit. Confirm dates and local requirements directly.

Jewish practice & meaning

Shiva: time for mourning and support

Shiva is the first seven-day period of mourning following burial for close relatives. Shabbat and Jewish festivals affect its observance, so ask your rabbi to confirm the dates and arrangements. Respect the family’s visiting times, allow mourners to lead the conversation and offer practical help without expecting them to host.

Remembering beyond shiva

Ask your rabbi about shloshim, Kaddish with a minyan and the mourning practices that apply to your relationship with the person who died. A yahrzeit marks the anniversary of the death on the Hebrew calendar. Torah learning, tzedakah and mitzvot in their memory can continue throughout the year; confirm the Hebrew date and any uncertainties with your rabbi.
